Scott Upton is one of the Southeast’s most talented and successful abstract painters. His multi-layered technique mixes acrylic paint and other pigments with reflective textures, sometimes including silver and gold leaf hidden beneath the paint. Rubbing and abrading reveal layers beneath the surface and create the effect of change over time through weathering. While Upton’s paintings are abstract, some hint at horizon lines, skies, and recognizable shapes that can suggest concrete images to the viewer. According to one critic, the effect is “as though he has dematerialized the world into pure light.”
Upton says of his work: “My work has always been about color and light in nature--its effect on our emotions, how it inspires passion, offers peace, feeds the soul, or calms the mind. I’m inspired by the order and beauty of nature, but also by nature’s chaos and decay…."
