Opening reception for the artists: Friday, April 24, 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.
Opposites attract. At first sight, the work of Curt Butler and Christina Foard couldn’t be more different. Yet the eight paintings contributed by each create an engaging visual dialogue between figuration and abstraction, counterpointing perceptions of the external world with those reflecting internal states.
Curt Butler’s oils with encaustic [wax] showing images of children at play are instant crowd pleasers. Their large scale produces a certain monumentality, ennobling the imagery. Their intent, however, runs deeper. “These images,” says Butler, “speak to memories common to many of us, either from our own childhood or our children’s childhood. The strong brushwork, mark making, and layering, unique to the encaustic process, evoke a time-weathered patina, and seek to blur and obscure any obvious ‘portrait’ references, making the images more universal.”
Similarly, Foard says, “painting has been a pathway to open and react to memories. I build imaginary spaces and scenes to create sensations.” Foard paints complex abstract images in oils that in her own words, are “process oriented and involve highly physical techniques: pouring, spraying, sanding, scraping, and carving paint.”
Eight by Two is Christina Foard’s first exhibition at Thomas Deans Fine Art, and it marks the first time that the Butler and Foard have shown together—with surprisingly beautiful results
The exhibition opens with a public reception for the artists on Friday, April 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., and continues through June 6. Gallery hours are 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday.
