...McArdle a well-recognized sculpture of stone, terra cotta and bronze breathes new life into classical depictions of the figure. Often looking “excavated” the terra cotta figures are subtle shades of terra cotta and terra sigellata. McArdle personally picks the monumental marble stone from an Italian quarry, roughs out her basic ideas then ships them to her American studio to painstaking finish them by hand. MaArdle explains: “My fascination with fragments and artifacts began when I was a child. They connect us to the past and to other cultures, to mysteries and to craft. They are pieces that appear incomplete and yet command a place in time and space in the world today. They provide a base upon which your imagination can fill in the missing details making the perceived piece timeless."
